I used Houdini to simulate a pile of burning tires to show both fire and smoke.  I used two pyro presets to create my effect.  Even though Houdini provides a number of presets for visual effects, these are just a jumping off point.  It still requires adjusting attributes such as temperature diffusion, cooling rate and burn rate to get the right look for an effect.

In this project, I brought in a pile of tires for the initial geometry.  I imported a second set of tires to be attached to the smokeless flames.  This made it look more like the top of the tires were burning.  I then imported another set of tires for the smoke.  I used the volcano pyro to create this effect.  To finish off the look, I imported multiple copies of the tires in order to have a field of tires.
